What does being a Science Active School mean to your school community?
Being a Science Active School is a reflection of our school’s dedication and growth in science education over the past six years. Previously, science formed part of our IB curriculum and was integrated within our units of inquiry. However, a school review highlighted the need for a stronger focus on STEM, with science identified as an area for significant improvement. In response, we established a dedicated specialist position in science (with an emphasis on STEM), a role I am proud to hold. Our school community is vibrant and curious, with students demonstrating inquiry, creativity, and critical thinking. Students thrive on hands-on experiences—whether it’s the excitement of making things ‘explode,’ asking in-depth questions, or observing those who might not usually excel take risks and succeed in science. Our engagement with initiatives such as the Oliphant Science Awards, National Science Week, the Marring Anning Art Prize, our gardening and chicken program, partnership with Green Adelaide, STEM clubs, and our general enthusiasm for ‘wondering about things’ showcase our commitment to real-world scientific opportunities. These programs encourage students to investigate, innovate, and communicate their findings—developing essential lifelong skills. Our science program supports curiosity and achievement, helping to foster a culture of scientific literacy and environmental stewardship. As a Science Active School, Blackwood Primary inspires students, staff, and our community to value science in everyday life and work together toward a more sustainable future.

How does your school support the growth and development of its science teachers?
As an IB world school, Blackwood Primary has a strong focus on inquiry-based learning and a growth mindset. Our approach encourages self-directed professional development, allowing teachers to explore and implement new learning strategies, provided they align with our inquiry framework. I am grateful that Blackwood supports teacher growth and allows each of us to develop expertise and passion in the teaching of science.
Can you share a standout moment or achievement that reflects your school’s passion for science?
There have been many proud moments, but one that stands out is having a student who was a three-time Oliphant Science Award finalist become an Oliphant Science Award Ambassador. Watching Dylan speak confidently at assemblies, support and inspire other students, and take on leadership within the science area has been deeply rewarding. This is why we do what we do—seeing students surpass what they thought possible. Thank you to SASTA for the opportunities and support you provide to both students and teachers.

What science programs or initiatives at your school are you most proud of, and why?
Six years ago, we recognised that science and STEM needed greater emphasis beyond what the IB approach alone provided. Since then, we have become regular participants in the Oliphant Science Awards, Marring Anning Art Prize, Science Week, and more. What makes me most proud, however, is how we have reconnected students with nature. Our once neglected garden area has been transformed by a dedicated team of volunteers and students from all year levels. We actively participate in Green Adelaide's Youth Environmental Leaders program, raise chickens, practise whole-school composting, propagate native plants, and run native planting days. The school garden is now a valued resource for hands-on science learning.
What’s a current project or innovation in your school’s science program that excites you?
We are currently working on two exciting projects. Firstly, we are creating a Greybox grassy woodland area within the school grounds, with the vision of establishing an outdoor classroom in this threatened ecological zone. Secondly, we are exploring the possibility of Blackwood Primary becoming a mini agricultural school, with goats, chickens, and potentially sheep, while expanding our market gardening activities. These projects offer amazing opportunities for students to engage in agricultural science and deepen their understanding of sustainable practices.
