The Adelaide Optics Chapter invites SA teachers and students to take part in its free annual Scientific Photography Competition. Schools are welcome to use the competition as part of a cross-curricular learning task.

Participants submit:

  • A scientific photograph
  • A 100-word explanation describing the science behind the image and what makes it exciting

The competition is open to all ages and experience levels.

Key dates:

  • Entries close: Mid-August
  • Exhibition: Late August

All submitted works will be displayed at the exhibition, with award winners invited to speak about their photography and scientific ideas.

In previous years, the exhibition has created opportunities for school students to connect with university students, scientists, and researchers.

Alongside general awards, there are dedicated categories recognising:

  • Indigenous scientific and cultural knowledge
  • Regional and remote participants
  • Junior Explorers (12 years and under)
  • Young Scientists (13 to 17 years)
  • Women, girls, and nonbinary participants
